Skiing For Beginners

Learning to ski may look exciting and let’s face it very exhilarating, but I must say it is an art and not as easy as it seems, especially as a beginner. I had the opportunity to ski with Inghams and was lucky enough to take my family along with me for the ride or should I say flight or even to ski!

There are many resorts for beginners and great destinations to go are to France and to Austria.

We went to the resort of Obergurgl in Austria, which is a perfect resort as it is on a high altitude and the highest ski villages in Europe. The snow is also snowsure, so it’s even more reliable when skiing, even if snow isn’t good that particular year.

The plane journey to Obergurgl was epic, if you don’t believe me, see for yourselves:

Obergurgl has some beautiful snow capped mountains, crisp air and slopes that are perfect for beginners. The great thing was that on one side of the mountain we could ski (adults) and on the other side, the kids, where I could see my son and be self assured that he was well taken cared of.

Apart from having a good time skiing is also a workout in itself. It is then therefore wise to work out before you go skiing so that you are fitting fit.

Inghams had booked my son, my husband and myself some ski lessons. The slopes were just steep enough but not overly scary and thus suitable for beginners. The instructors were also fab, very patient and quite amusing.

So what  do you need?

First of all lot of energy! LOL. Then of course clothing is needed, whether bought or otherwise borrowed. Needed is a ski jacket and ski trousers, also known as salopettes. Ski socks and ski gloves are also a must. Basically, skiing is a very expensive activity indeed, so a desire and love to ski is essential.

It’s best to choose a resort that offers good all inclusive packages, which include ski lifts, ski equipment hire and lessons. This will save a fare few pennies.

Ski equipment includes ski hire of ski’s, helmet and boots. Wearing the ski gear and boots (which can often be rather heavy) is the workout in itself. Carrying things around is not easy and therefore having help is often essential. I luckily had my husband who would carry the ski’s for both my son and I. Bless.

Fortunately, the ski buses ran from our lovely hotel; the Edelweiss & Gurgl to the ski slopes, which meant it was easier to handle all the equipment, especially if not used to it. The Edelweiss offered high standards of cuisine and service as well as skiing to and from the doorstep. With its perfect location next to the lifts and slopes, as well as an extensive leisure area, all our needs were well catered for.

I must admit I am not a natural skier so it meant a lot of effort with skiing was needed. Turns are called Ploughs, yes not the machine or even the rice kind. LOL.

I was more in awe of my son, who was a natural skier and had no fear factor whatsoever. My husband only lasted half a day, I am so skiing wasn’t his cup of tea.

I do recommend you try skiing if you like fun things to do and are sporty. I recommend Obergurgl as a good resort for beginners and also skiing with Inghams.

  1. The resort looks like so much fun and although I’d love to learn how to ski I don’t think I have the confidence or balance to do it x
